Hypertension in Cats

Hypertension in Cats

Following your cat's health exam, the veterinarian may recommend that you measure his blood pressure. Hypertension in cats is a condition now well documented. As in humans, it is often silent until sometimes irreversible damage occurs. It exposes your pet to serious renal, cardiac, ophthalmological (hemorrhages and retinal detachment) and cerebrovascular complications.

Blood pressure testing is a simple and painless procedure for your cat. It is similar to the one used in humans and is performed in your presence.

Cats most at risk are those suffering from heart, kidney, and thyroid problems. In addition, all cats over the age of 7 should ideally have their blood pressure checked annually.

Should your pet be diagnosed with hypertension, your veterinarian will prescribe a blood pressure lowering medication, and monitor the condition to avoid the worst and possibly save your cat's life.
